Claire M. Fraser is the co-founder and President of the Institute for Genomics Research, a nonprofit organization devoted to sequencing and functional analysis of human, animal, plant, and microbial genomes. She has led teams that sequenced the genomes of several microbial organisms, including Haemophilus influenza and Borrelia burgdorferi, the cause of Lyme disease. She also played a major role in sequencing the first plant genome. She has revolutionized approaches to the study of structural and functional genomics as well as applied genomics. She has authored more than 140 scientific papers. She is the recipient of many honors and awards including an honorary doctorate from the University of Bergen, Norway; a place among the list of Maryland's 100 Top Women; the IMAS Award from the Institute for Mathematics and Advanced Supercomputing; and the Computer World/Smithsonian Award in Information Technology.
