Chunli Bai

Chunli Bai is professor and executive vice president of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and the president of the Graduate University of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (GUCAS). He is considered to be a key architect of China's Nanotechnology Development and "father" of China's Scanning Tunneling Microscopy. His pivotal contributions to nanoscience research in China, both as a scientist and a policy maker, have earned him international recognition and respect. He is the author of a long list of scientific publications and has won more than twenty prestigious awards and prizes for his academic achievements. He was elected a member of CAS and a fellow of the Academy of Sciences for the Developing World (TWAS) in 1977. He is a foreign associate of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences, an honorary fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry, and has been named honorary doctor or honorary professor at many universities abroad. Currently, he serves as the chief scientist of the National Steering Committee for Nanoscience and Technology. He is described as a good friend of the University of Minnesota, being a co-host (with Dean Crouch) of a successful bilateral seminar series between the University and CAS, and a host to several University Presidential and Deans' delegations to China.
