Yannis Tsividis

Yannis Tsividis received his B.S. in electrical engineering in the College of Science and Engineering in 1972 from the University of Minnesota. He received his M.S. and Ph.D. in electrical engineering at the University of California at Berkeley. Currently, he is a professor in the Department of Engineering at Columbia University. Described as a masterful teacher, Dr. Tsividis has made significant contributions to the solid-state circuits industry, particularly in the area of companding coder technology for telephone sound quality. In 1976, he invented the first full-integrated MOS operational amplifier and demonstrated its use in a coder-decoder for digital techphony. His patented work is referenced in more than 400 patent applications and has been widely used in biomedical devices, computer disk drives, consumer electronics, and in wireless communications equipment. Dr. Tsividis is the author of three books, and more than 119 articles, journals and papers. He has been recognized with many national awards, including the Institute for Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Circuits and Systems Society Education Award (2010) and their Golden Jubilee Medal (2000), the IEEE Kirchhoff Award (2007), and the IEEE Undergraduate Teaching Award (2005), to name a few.
