Donald E. Sveen

Donald E. Sveen earned a bachelor's degree in business administration from the University of Minnesota business school in 1954. He later earned an MBA from Harvard University. His business career is impressive. He began work at Investors Diversified Services (IDS) and by 1970 he was sent by the company to turn around the newly acquired and struggling John Nuveen Co. He went on to become president (1989), chief operating officer, and director of John Nuveen Co. and its subsidiaries; and chairman, chief executive officer, and director of the Nuveen Select Tax-Free Income Portfolio Funds until his retirement in 1996. With education as one of his priorities, he has been involved in the teaching of business ethics, finance, and spiritual education. He has been generous with his time and resources to support undergraduate business education, including the Carlson School of Management. In addition, he is active on numerous boards and committees that strive to improve communities.
