Andrew Sukawaty

Andrew Sukawaty received a master of business administration degree in 1986 from the Carlson School of Management at the University of Minnesota. He is a highly esteemed leader in the telecommunications services arena, including telephone, wireless, cable TV and satellite. He was involved in launching some of the first cellular mobile phone systems, including Sprint PCS, where he served as president, chief operation officer, and chief executive officer; and UK Mobile Operator now called T-Mobile UK, where he served as chief operating officer. Today, in addition to serving as Inmarsat’s non-executive chairman, Sukawaty is an executive in residence for the global private equity firm, Warburg Pincus, located in the U.K. Inmarsat provides global satellite communications that provide emergency communication and helps to bridge the digital divide in developing areas. It is the only provider of the Global Maritime Distress and Safety System. He was the CEO for 11 years, where he led the company through its privatization and subsequent listing on the London Stock Exchange in 2005. Sukawaty also served as chairman of Ziggo, a cable television company in Holland. He is described as an industry leader, a multibillion-dollar deal broker, and a humanitarian who, through his leadership of Inmarsat and industry organizations, has contributed to the preservation of tens of thousands of lives.
