Erwin M. Schaffer

Erwin M. Schaffer, described as a visionary leader who has worked tirelessly to promote excellence in dental practice, research and education, received a D.D.S. from the University of Minnesota in 1945. He maintained a clinical practice of Periodontics in Minneapolis for over fifty years. He served as the dean of the School of Dentistry from 1964-1977. Under his leadership, new programs were developed in comprehensive patient care, international education and research received greater emphasis through student exchange programs, student enrollment increased and faculty expanded, membership in the School of Dentistry Alumni Society increased, the Century Club private giving club was founded, and planning, fundraising, and construction of new facilities took place. He has published over 100 scientific articles in local, national, and international dental, periodontal and basic science journals. He served as the director of the American Board of Periodontology and as president of the American Academy of Periodontology. He is the recipient of numerous awards and honors including the Gold Medal Award from the American Academy of Periodontology.
