James Peterson

Outstanding Achievement Award Recipient

Dr. Peterson received his MSc. (1949) and Ph.D (1952) from the Department of Geology and Geophysics at the University of Minnesota. Dr. Peterson has made numerous contributions to geology through his teaching, research and government service. His specific area of specialization in geology is stratigraphy and sedimentology, which deals with the correlation of rock units and the determination of the timing of geologic processes. Dr. Peterson's work in the area of petroleum assessment is recognized nationally and internationally. Dr. Peterson is recognized for his many outstanding research publications. In 1988 he received the President's Award of the American Association of Petroleum Geologists for the best paper published in the Bulletin that year. Dr. Peterson remains extremely active in geology and continues to teach and share his unique knowledge of the Earth with professional colleagues and students alike. The All-University Honors Committee highly recommends Dr. James A. Peterson for the University of Minnesota Outstanding Achievement Award.
