Michael V. Martin, chancellor, Colorado State University System, received his Ph.D. in applied economics from the College of Food, Agricultural and Natural Resource Sciences (CFANS) in 1977 at the University of Minnesota. Before arriving at the University of Minnesota 1992, Martin served on the faculty at Oregon State and Portland State Universities. During his six year tenure at the University of Minnesota, he served as acting and then assistant and associate director of the Agricultural Experiment Station; dean of the CFANS; and vice president for agricultural policy. After leaving the University of Minnesota, he went on to serve as vice president for agriculture and natural resources at the University of Florida, president of New Mexico State University, and chancellor of Louisiana State University before assuming his current post. Martin is known for his dedication to the land-grant mission of teaching, research, and service. He is one of only six individuals to receive the Justin Smith Morrill Memorial Award, named after the author of the bill creating land-grant universities. In addition, Martin has received the New Mexico Outstanding Leader Award (2008), the highest award given by Leadership New Mexico; Men Who Champion Women Award (2010) by the National Diversity Council; and, the New Mexico National Guard recognized him with the Above and Beyond Award (2007). He is the recipient of the Outstanding Alumni Award from the Department of Applied Economics (2004) and was selected to be the James P. Houck Memorial Lecturer (2007).
