Thomas S. Lundgren

Outstanding Achievement Award Recipient

Institute of Technology, November 2, 2006

Thomas Lundgren received his bachelor's degree (1954), master's degree (1956), and Ph.D. (1960), in aerospace engineering and mechanics from the University of Minnesota. Described as a world leader in the theory of turbulence and theoretical fluid mechanics, he spent his entire career at the University of Minnesota. He was promoted to full professor in 1966 and served at this rank until 2000 when he retired. He is considered one of the most important figures in fluid mechanics in the past 40 years. He made significant contributions to turbulence, magneto-hydrodynamics, free molecular flow, shock structure, rotating fluids, vortex dynamics, drop dynamics, and solid-liquid flows. He developed the Lundgren-Monin equations, which are extensively used in the study of combustion and other applications. He is the author of approximately 70 publications in the top journals in his field. Notably, he has an international reputation for his scholarly research, teaching, advising students and mentoring of young faculty members.
