John E. Larkin

John E. Larkin, who started out in General College, received his bachelor of science degree in science education from the College of Education and Human Development at the University of Minnesota in 1953. He went on to graduate from the University of Minnesota Medical School in 1960 and on to Harvard Medical School for his residency at Massachusetts General Hospital. He has had a groundbreaking medical career as an orthopedic surgeon, performing the first total joint replacement procedures in the Twin Cities as well as the first arthroscopies in the state of Minnesota. He is a renowned patron of the arts who has served on the governing boards of the Minneapolis Institute of Arts, the Irish-American Cultural Institute, Minnesota Opera, and the Minnesota Museum of Art. He is also an acclaimed horticulturalist and a tireless advocate for education. He has contributed greatly to the leadership of the University of Minnesota as an alumni representative on a University Senate Committee, the Landscape Arboretum Foundation Board, the College of Education and Human Development's Campaign Minnesota Leadership Committee as well as the Board of the James Ford Bell Museum. He has also served as a member of the Minnesota State Council for Quality Education.
