Geraldine A. Evans

Geraldine A. Evans received three degrees: a bachelor of science degree in social science education (1960), a masters of arts in educational psychology (1965), and a Ph.D. in educational administration (1968) from the College of Education and Human Development (CEHD) at the University of Minnesota. Described as a pioneering leader and tireless advocate for educational opportunity and access, she served as the first female chancellor of the Minnesota Community College System, played a major role in the creation of the MNSCU system of colleges, and served as Policy Fellow with the Minnesota Department of Education in Washington. Dr. Evans is credited with creating a unique three-way higher education partnership by bringing together representatives and curricula from Winona State University, the University of Minnesota, and the Rochester Community College. Because of this partnership, students can earn a four-year degree in Rochester. Dr. Evans served as the State Executive Director of Illinois Community Colleges in 1994 and in 1997 her leadership was again recognized and she was appointed as the Chancellor of San Jose Evergreen Community College District until her retirement in 2004. A loyal alumnus, she serves on the CEHD Dean's Advisory Council and has participated in foundational discussions and visioning for the new Jandris Center for Innovation in Higher Education.
