Douglas P. DeMaster

Douglas P. DeMaster received a Ph.D. degree in 1978 in Ecology and Behavioral Biology from the University of Minnesota. Since completing his Ph.D., he has continued to gain recognition as a stellar scientist as well as a teacher, administrator, and national leader in conservation biology. He currently is the Director of the Alaska Fisheries Science Center. He is credited with revolutionizing the scientific basis for evaluating the status of marine mammals and the effects of human-caused mortality upon them. He is the recipient of the Gold Medal Award, the highest award granted by the Secretary of Commerce, for his contributions that have impacted science, marine mammal conservation, and American society.
