Gary W. Brudvig

Gary W. Brudvig received a bachelor of science degree in chemistry in 1976 from the College of Science and Engineering at the University of Minnesota. He completed his doctoral and postdoctoral studies at the California Institute of Technology and the University of California, Berkeley, respectively. He is currently the Benjamin Silliman Professor of Chemistry and the chair of the Department of Chemistry at Yale University. In addition, he is the founding director of the Yale Energy Sciences Institute. Brudvig is recognized as a seminal contributor to the understanding of photosynthesis at the molecular level, and his work is paving the way for the design of artificial systems to turn solar energy into sustainable fuels. His service contributions are significant. He has been an associate editor of Biochemistry, the leading journal in the field since 2000; organized several conferences and symposia; fostered science education in high schools; and, taught seminars at the New Haven Teachers Institute. Brudvig has over 300 publications; advised and mentored 42 Ph.D. students and 32 postdoctoral fellows; and has also mentored numerous Yale undergraduates.
