Richard J. Bertin

Richard J. Bertin received a master of science degree in hospital administration in 1967 and a doctor of philosophy degree in pharmacy administration in 1976 from the College of Pharmacy at the University of Minnesota. He currently is a consultant in private practice on certification and credentialing topics and an assessor for the Accreditation Program for Personnel Certification Bodies of the American National Standards Institute. Prior to 2010, Bertin was the executive director of the Board of Pharmacy Specialties (BPS), a position he held since 1997 when he left the United States Public Health Service. During his tenure at the Public Health Service, Bertin served as chief pharmacist officer (as an assistant surgeon general at the grade of rear admiral). He was responsible for advising the surgeon general, the assistant secretary for health, and other federal and non-federal leaders on national pharmacy issues. As BPS’s first executive director, he was responsible for the overall management and growth of the BPS specialty certification program. He is the recipient of numerous awards and honors, including the Public Health Service Surgeon General’s Medallion and the Public Health Service Distinguished Service Medal. Bertin has served on numerous boards and committees and has published many articles.
