Lee Raymond earned his Ph.D. from the Department of Chemical Engineering at the University of Minnesota (1963). He started out at Exxon as a reservoir engineer and progressed steadily with appointments of increasing responsibility. By 1975 he was Vice President and Director of Lago Oil and Transport Co., Ltd , president of Exxon Nuclear in '79 and of Exxon Enterprizes in '81. He was named Chairman and CEO of the Exxon Corporation in '93 and assumed his present position with the merger of Exxon and Mobile. Over the years, Raymond has been very insistent on safety and reliability. The 1998 Campaign for Cleaner Corporations put Exxon first in its category and commended its "superior environmental performance." He has received numerous awards and recognition for his public service, including the gold medal of the National Policy Association for his outstanding leadership in the public good.
