Zhanjiang Liu

Zhanjiang Liu, world renowned expert in fish genomics, received a masters degree (1985) in plant pathology, College of Food, Agricultural and Natural Resource Sciences, and a PhD (1989) in genetics and cell biology from the College of Biological Sciences at the University of Minnesota. He served as associate vice provost and vice president for research at Auburn University and currently serves as the interim vice chancellor and provost at Syracuse University. He is described as a pioneering, innovative scientist and scholar in aquaculture and fisheries who developed the first all-fish expression vectors for genetically engineering fish for faster growth and shorter time to market. He is considered a world leader in the area of catfish genomics. His body of work has made a concrete difference for those who rely on fish for livelihood and the people that rely on them for sustenance. Liu is considered an outstanding educator, having supervised over 100 graduate students, postdoctoral fellows and researchers, many who have become influential scientists in diverse fields throughout the United States and Asia. Liu has 340 peer-reviewed publications with an h-index rating of 72, around the level for Nobel Prize winners. In addition to holding many honorary positions throughout China, Liu has been a leader on many international advisory boards and committees. His colleagues describe him as a truly outstanding scientist, educator, and world citizen.
