John Hammergren received a bachelor of arts degree (1981) from the Carlson School of Management at the University of Minnesota. He is the chairman, president, and CEO of McKesson Corporation, the oldest and largest health care company in the nation. Hammergren joined McKesson in 1996 when the company was experiencing troubled times. Under his leadership, the company not only recovered, but became the standard bearer for helping health care organizations deliver better patient care. McKesson has expanded into global markets, advancing from 38thto 5thposition on the Fortune 500, and quadrupled revenues to $190.9 billion. Hammergren is the co-author of the book titled, “Skin in the Game: How Putting Yourself First Today Will Revolutionize Health Care Tomorrow.” In addition to serving as chairman of the board of directors of McKesson Corporation, he serves as trustee of the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS); chairman of the Supervisory Board, Celesio AG; co-chair of the CSIS Task Force on Women’s and Family Health; and member of the Business Roundtable. Hammergren is the recipient of numerous awards and honors, including the 2016 Executive of the Year, W.P. Carey School of Business, Arizona State University; America’s Most Admired Companies, Fortune (2009-2015); 50 Leaders in Health IT, Becker’s Hospital Review (2015); 100 Best-Performing CEOs in the World (2014 and 2015), Harvard Business Review; and he was named 2015 Best CEO for the health care technology and distribution segment by buy-side analysts, money managers, and sell-side researchers.
