Alumni Service Award Recipient
College of Science and Engineering, September 28, 2023
Jim Borowick received his bachelor of science degree in electrical engineering from the Institute of Technology (now College of Science and Engineering) at the University of Minnesota in 1985. He has been instrumental in creating a collaborative and successful partnership between Medtronic and the College of Science and Engineering (CSE)’s Women in Science and Engineering (WISE) program. Since 2016, this partnership has grown to include a mentoring program, a living and learning community for first-year students, networking and professional development events, site visits, internships, scholarships, and more. Borowick also serves as Medtronic’s volunteer engagement team lead for the partnership and his hands-on leadership has made the program a success for both Medtronic and CSE. He recruits volunteers, deploys financial resources in support of the program, and reports on the program’s activities and success to increase Medtronic’s support for the partnership. As Borwick prepares to step away from leading the program, he has developed a transition plan and identified a successor to ensure that the partnership continues. Borowick has also laid the groundwork for the program to expand to include new initiatives targeted at other underrepresented populations in STEM.
