Richard Jay Sundberg received his Ph.D. in chemistry from the University of Minnesota in 1962. He is known for his extensive contributions to heterocyclic organic chemistry, particularly indoles, aryl nitrenes and related compounds biologically active against tumors, parasites, and used for photoaffinity labeling. He is the author of two monographs and ten reviews on indoles. He is also the co-author of the preeminent graduate text in organic chemistry, now in its third edition.
