John E. Foss

John E. Foss received a Ph.D. in Soil Science from the University of Minnesota in 1965. Since then he has held academic positions at the University of Wisconsin-River Falls, University of Maryland, North Dakota State University, and the University of Tennessee. His early work focused on classroom teaching and research. He is now considered the national and world leader in the use of soil information to locate sites and interpret archaeology information. He has published approximately 71 refereed papers, more than 87 Research Reports/Bulletins, 9 books and book chapters. In 1995, he was elected as president of the American Society of Agronomy; he has held important positions in the Soil Science Society of America, and Soil and Water Conservation Society; and, he has been a member of several other national and international organizations.
