Robert James Gorlin came to the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry in 1956 as the first chairman of the Division of Oral Pathology. His life work has been devoted to oral pathology, genetics, craniofacial syndromes, and hereditary hearing loss and its syndromes. His many colleagues consider him to be the "father of syndromes of the head and neck." He first published "Syndromes of the Head and Neck" in 1964. At the present time, in his retirement, he has completed the 4th edition of this volume, which was published in 2001. In addition, he has published a multitude of scientific papers in refereed journals. He has received numerous honors and awards. Our University recognized him by naming him a Regents' Professor. He also has served on many boards, one of which as a founding member of the American Board of Medical Genetics (1982).
