His Imperial Highness Hitachi was born in 1935 the son of Japanese Emperor Hirohito and the younger brother of the man who became the current Emperor. The Imperial family has a tradition of biological scholarship. The Prince graduated from Gakushuin University and continued his studies in Zoology at Tokyo University from 1958 to 1969. Since 1969 he has been a visiting researcher at the Japanese Foundation for Cancer Research in Tokyo. His research has focused on chemical carcinogenesis and comparative cancer biology. He has published more than 40 scientific papers in English and 39 papers and abstracts in Japanese. Prince Hitachi is the recipient of an honorary Doctor of Science degree from George Washington University in Washington, D.C. and is an honorary member of the German Cancer Association.
